Biblical Stories

This Postmodern generation wants stories. They love stories. They learn from stories. And thats not bad. Its great to weave stories together as we present the Good News to this generation.

But, as we tell stories, we must always make sure that there is truth in the stories — Biblical truth! In the midst of being relevant to the culture, we need to be making the point of truth. And the truth of the Good News Gospel is centered on the doctrine of the cross. Jesus Christ shed His blood for the sins of the world.

That must be an essential part of the stories we share. Why? Because the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the foundation of Christianity. Without the belief that Christ actually died for our sins, rose again, and is alive today at the right hand of God, our religion is just that – religion. With no power to change lives. Remember, without the shedding of blood theres no forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 9:22).

So when we share our faith, you and I must focus on the true story of Jesus Christs death the resurrection. Its amazing, powerful, Good News for a weary and broken world!

What Is Heaven? Is It A Real Place, Or Just A Fairy Tale?

Yes Heaven is a real place! The Bible talks about Heaven many times, and makes it very clear that people who believe in Jesus to save them from their sins will go there one day, either when we die, or when Jesus comes back to earth to get us.

After Jesus comes back to Earth HepromisesHe will bring us back to live with Him on the New Earth! Earth He says! A Real place with Water, Grass, flowers, and Trees that you can touch, feel, taste, smell, hear, see . . .

God says in Isaiah 65:17 in the Bible:
Look! I am creating New Heavens and a New Earth, and no one will even think about the old ones anymore.

The Bible tells us that Heaven is just as real as the Earth where we live now. God even calls the place where well live forever the New Earth. So how can we know what Heaven is like? Well, the Bible tells us!

Just think, if you were trying to describe someplace that you had been, but none of your friends have been there, you would probably tell them about it by comparing it with someplace you all knew and had been. Say you rode an amazing ride at Disney World, you might compare it with some of the rides the Carnival had when it came to your town.

Well, this is what some of the writers of the Bible did to help us understand what Heaven is like. They describe Heaven as; a City, Paradise, a Garden,a Resting Place, the Kingdom of God, a Heavenly Country, The Kingdom of Heaven, and The Future Dwelling Place of the Righteous.

This place will be beautiful far beyond anything we could ever dream about! But, that doesnt mean we shouldnt try! Just close your eyes think of the most beautiful and fun place you haveever seen? What made it beautiful to you? Why is it so fun? Thinking about what Heaven may look like will make you dream about it and get you evenmore excited to go there!

If you can imagine every beautiful place on Earth, the Grand Canyon, Rain Forests, the Smoky Mountains, the beaches in Hawaii, theyre all only a small taste of what the New Earth will look like! The trees will be taller, more fun to climb! The grass will be greener, the sky will be bluer! And speaking of the sky, thats where the most beautiful City on the New Earth is going to come from!

John, one of the writers of the Bible, had a vision or a dream and God showed him what this new City will look like! This city is called the New Jerusalem, and thats where God Himself will live! The Bible says that after God makes the New Earth, the New Jerusalem will come down out of the sky and God the Father and Jesus will bothlive on Earth with us! This will make the New Earth the Capital Planet of the Universe!

John tells us in the book of Revelation Chapter 21, that the City is 1,500 miles long, 1,500 miles wide, and 1,500 miles high. A city that size that was sitting in the middle of the United States would go from Canada to Mexico and from Georgia to the California border! Now thats what I call a capital city!

John also tells us that the city has walls of Jasper and the city itself was pure gold as clear as glass! The foundation, thats the part the city is built on, like the concrete your house is sitting on, is made of different kinds and color of Jewels, and the gates to the city were made from one solid Pearl!

John also describes there being a river flowing down the middle of the main street, this is what is called the River of Life. He said it flowed from the Throne of God and the water was crystal clear, can you imagine a flowing river that was so clear that you could look down and see the bottom? And everyone will be able to drink from the river. Im sure it will be better than any water weve ever tasted before!

On each side of the River grows the Tree of Life, this tree used to be in the Garden of Eden, but God moved it when Adam and Eve sinned, and He will bring it back to Earth one day and we will be able to eat its fruit again. I can only imagine how wonderful that fruit will taste! Now, there will be many other cities in the New Earth, but none quite like this Capital City. I cant wait to see it for myself!

Service

You may have heard the saying, “Practice random acts of kindness.” I like it. But did you know that there is an entire movement based on this concept? Theres actually something called the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation. Their motto? “Do kindness.”

People reach out to others in an effort to make life better for them. Some raise funds to help kids who use wheelchairs. Others give out hamburgers to hungry people on the street. One little girl collected books, toys, and stuffed animals to give to kids in the hospital. She wanted everyone to have a friend to hold onto. Thats touching. Its a great concept.

Jesus calls His followers to something on top of good deeds. He calls us to evangelism! “Go and proclaim the Good News” he said. The heart of Christ is that others would know Him and experience the life-changing power of the Holy Spirit. Yes, reaching out in love and kindness to others is certainly something God expects every Christian to do, everyday. But it should never replace the call of the Great Commission.

Evangelism is social action. It is the greatest act of kindness in the whole universe. We should share with others how to experience a personal relationship with Jesus and with God the Father, giving them the hope of eternal life and heaven when they die. So, do good deeds on a practical level and do the greatest good deed… give people the Good News of the cross and resurrection of Christ.

The Missing Link

Born and raised in London, England, Emma Owen grew up going to church with her family. But even as a young girl, there always seemed to be something missing from her church experience.

Then, in 1984, Emma’s mom brought her to our team’s “Festival to London.” This festival was a 6-week campaign to touch the heart of London for Jesus Christ.

The night Emma, the teenager, and her mom attended, Emma realized what was missing in her life was a relationship with Jesus. So when I asked all those in the stadium how many wanted to make a decision for Christ, Emma jumped up from her seat to make a public declaration.

Emma says that her commitment that night was the foundation of her faith that she built on for years to come. Today, Emma and her husband, with two children, live in Manchester, England where they share the Good News with teenagers in their city: first-class contemporary Christian music and messages.

Think of children you know who attend church, but perhaps don’t know the Lord personally. Pray for them, by name, and when there’s an opportunity, share the way of salvation. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” and that includes children.

Don’t ever assume that just because someone is inside a church, they know the way to Jesus. Many times they are unconsciously waiting for someone to share the missing link with them. That someone could be you!

Our Heavenly Home

It’s amazing how much Abraham saw by faith. In Hebrews 11:10 it says that “he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.”

It’s fascinating to think that Abraham could look forward to heaven. I mean, he didn’t have the Bible. He had never heard of Jesus Christ. He didn’t know about the Holy Spirit. He didn’t know about the blood of the cross. Yet in the distance he could see heaven because of His faith in Almighty God.

I am amazed how many Christians don’t think about heaven much at all. We believers ought to be specialists in heaven. We ought to know everything there is to be known from the Scripture, and know by faith that’s exactly where we’re going. We have the Old and New Testaments that tells us all about heaven. It’s one of the glorious reasons we can celebrate that we know Jesus Christ! Study John chapters 10 – 14, for instance.

Jesus tells us heaven is our home. It’s made for us. He has prepared it. Let’s not be ashamed. Let’s talk about it with boldness. You’d be amazed how many non-believers want to know what heaven is all about, and how they can get there. Will you be the one to tell them? Will you try to reach your world?
