Service

You may have heard the saying, “Practice random acts of kindness.” I like it. But did you know that there is an entire movement based on this concept? There’s actually something called the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation. Their motto? “Do kindness.”

People reach out to others in an effort to make life better for them. Some raise funds to help kids who use wheelchairs. Others give out hamburgers to hungry people on the street. One little girl collected books, toys, and stuffed animals to give to kids in the hospital. She wanted everyone to have a friend to hold onto. That’s touching. It’s a great concept.

Jesus calls His followers to something on top of good deeds. He calls us to evangelism! “Go and proclaim the Good News” he said. The heart of Christ is that others would know Him and experience the life-changing power of the Holy Spirit. Yes, reaching out in love and kindness to others is certainly something God expects every Christian to do, everyday. But it should never replace the call of the Great Commission.

Evangelism is social action. It is the greatest act of kindness in the whole universe. We should share with others how to experience a personal relationship with Jesus and with God the Father, giving them the hope of eternal life and heaven when they die. So, do good deeds on a practical level and do the greatest good deed… give people the Good News of the cross and resurrection of Christ.

Stuck in a Rut

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Besetting sins.” That’s what the old-timers used to call them. They’re the sins we go back to again and again. With some of us it’s temper, with some of us it’s gossip, with others it’s bitterness, or it could be a sexual sin.

So what do we do when we’re caught in a rut of sinful behavior? We have to go back to the Lord every single time! Every time confess and move on. I’ve heard many new converts say, “How many times am I going to go back and confess my sins?” As many as it takes! Eventually you’ll get so tired of confession that you’ll probably decide, I better not do it again. This is getting boring.

David says in Psalm 32 that he felt like his bones were dry as in the heat of summer until he confessed his sins to the Lord. And then he was forgiven, set free. It didn’t mean that he wasn’t tempted again, but now he was free from besetting sins.

First John 1 tells us that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. Romans 8 says we aren’t obligated to the sinful nature any more.

Hebrews 10 says this is now God’s covenant with us: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.”

Don’t let besetting sins keep you from living fervently and free in Jesus. Your victory over sin is a tremendous testimony of abundant life in Jesus Christ, our Savior!

The Greatest Epidemic

Here’s a question to you… I was at a conference on how to share the Good News in our post-modern generation. One of the speakers said, “The greatest humanitarian crisis in our time for us Christians is the AIDS epidemic in Africa.”

I was shocked! I thought, “Yes, the AIDS epidemic is a tremendous crisis. We’re all working on it. However, the greatest humanitarian crisis of all time is that millions are dying each day without Jesus Christ. AIDS or no AIDS. It’s our responsibility to give them the spiritual medicine, which is John 3:16 in the Bible.”

The AIDS crisis in Africa, and elsewhere, is horrific. How much worse then is spiritual death – being separated from God forever? Jesus Christ is the remedy to heal the epidemic of spiritual death. He himself said, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Those are strong words of truth! It’s our job and our privilege to share God’s Good News with those who don’t know the Lord Jesus. He calls you and me to share the Good News Gospel in word and deed, in obedience. And what tremendous joy we’ll have when we see God’s power at work within us saving souls for eternity! And when we get to heave, and meet them there – man, that’s exciting!

A Calling from God

Evangelism Lessons from Moses

I’m talking about Moses becoming a good example for you and me. Moses had a sense of calling from God. It took many years for that calling to be realized, but once it happened, Moses made history!

Moses brought a million and a half Israelites out of Egypt. The Red Sea parted with a touch of his staff. God used him to set the captives free who had been in bondage for over 400 years!

Do you have an inner sense of calling from God? Each one of us has an idea of how God wants to use us. As followers of Jesus, we’re commanded to set the captives of Satan free by proclaiming the message of Jesus Christ. And because we’re all made uniquely with specific gifts, God has a special purpose for you that’s different from his purpose for me.

John 15:16 says, “You didn’t choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear much fruit, fruit that will last.”

God wants to use you in extraordinary ways to bring others into the Kingdom of Heaven. So what’s your calling? Spend time with God. Listen to Him. As you read the Holy Bible, listen to His Word. Get on your knees and say, “God, speak to me. Lay on my heart what am I supposed to do.” I guarantee it! The Lord will show you the next step, and the next, and open up the doors into that great calling for you – just as He did with Moses!
