The Right Kind of Pride
Today I want to talk about the right kind of pride – pride in Jesus Christ. Sadly, at some given point, all of us have been ashamed of Jesus. There is a pressure to hide His name. But in Romans 1:16, St. Paul declares, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
I know someone who is a great example of living out this verse. His name is Jose. Jose is a pastor, but also a member of the city council where he lives in Florida. He told me that in this council, each member takes turns praying at the start of the meetings. No matter what their religion, everyone has the opportunity to pray, however they’d like, one day at a time. So when it was Jose’s turn, he prayed up a storm. He ended saying, “I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, my Savior.”
When it was his turn to pray again, the mayor called him up. “Jose,” he said, “Perhaps tone down your prayer this time, and use another name besides Jesus.” Jose said to the mayor, “Oh, it’s all right, mayor, I don’t have to pray.” He said, “If I pray without the name of Jesus, God won’t hear me anyway.” I love Jose’s response! He was definitely not concerned about being politically correct.
Let’s you and I remember to be humble about ourselves, yet proud of Jesus Christ. No other name has the power to change lives. There is no other name under heaven – Jesus Christ.
