Forgiveness in Christ
Years ago I met a fascinating war hero named Dutch. He had fought in World War II, and in the Six Day War in Israel. He was a pilot and had fascinating stories to tell. But Dutch was now in his 80s, and getting close to the end of his life.
So one night he asked to talk with me. As we sat down in a hotel lobby, Dutch said, “Luis, I want to have eternal life. I need forgiveness of sins. How can I do it?” I said, “It’s really very simple, Dutch. You receive Jesus Christ. He forgives your sins, and gives you eternal life in heaven when you die.”
Dutch then burst into tears. He said, “But I’ve done so many bad things.” I said, “Dutch, God knows them all. Christ took them away on the cross.” He said, “But you can’t just shove all my mistakes under a chair.”
I said, “You’re right. God didn’t shove them under a chair. He shoved them on His Son on the cross.” Dutch started crying again, but he was ready to accept Jesus Christ. It was fabulous! This military hero was thrilled to be at peace with God.
Dutch’s story reminds me how desperate people are to be forgiven and cleansed from a guilty conscience. When you share the Good News, remember the power found in the words of Christ Jesus: “Your sins and evil deeds I will remember no more.”
