A Softened Heart

About five years ago I was in North Carolina with one of my wife’s relatives.  He was celebrating his 70th birthday.  Now this guy is very bright – he has a PhD and is very intelligent.  He’s also been an atheist his entire life.  He would tell me, “Luis, I don’t believe in God.  That’s just a crutch for weak people.”

But while we were at his home, I noticed a Bible on his bed stand.  He said to me, “I’ve always bragged that I’m an atheist, but when I turned 70 I started asking questions. I don’t want to fool around anymore. If there’s a God, I want to know Him, and if there’s eternal life, I want to have it.”

Isn’t that amazing?  This guy was ready to get serious with God because his youth was gone.  That can often be the case with people who are facing the last years of life.  Is there an older person you know who has never made a decision for Jesus Christ?  Maybe it’s your grandma or grandpa.  Perhaps you think they’ll never change. Don’t give up!  Luke 1:27 reminds us that “Nothing is impossible with God.”  Pray believing that God will soften their heart.  And then take a step of faith, and share the Good News with them.  They may be ready, even now, to respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
