Beyond
the Shadows
The Real Deal
Do you
live in the shadows? Spiritually, I mean? A shadow is a very
minimal thing. Most of the time when you see a shadow you've got
to imagine 98% of what's behind the shadow -- a building, a car,
a person. All you see is a distorted little outline; the real
thing is not visible. The Bible calls the old covenant a shadow
of the real One.
The book of Hebrews says, "The law is only a shadow of the good
things that are coming-not the realities themselves." In other
words, the law of Moses, or the shadow, has been set aside. It's
no longer needed because it's been replaced by the real thing,
Jesus Christ. He was God's perfect payment for sin. And we've
got to make that point all the time. The ultimate sacrifice was
paid through His death on the cross, giving us free access to
God.
But there are still so many people you and I know trying to pay
their way to God. They're still living under the shadow. I even
heard of a man who stood on one leg for three years just so he
could become more holy. How sad!
The truth is that the only requirement before God - for holiness
is to accept God's free gift of new, real life through Jesus
Christ. He is the real thing. When we understand the sacrifice
Jesus made, His love compels us to tell our world that we don't
have to live in the shadow!
Get Up and Go
A few
years ago we were having a festival in a major North American
city. The chairman of our festival in another city was a really
great leader and an active member of a local church. On the
closing night he came to visit the festival and sat in the front
row with his wife while I preached.
When I gave the invitation, the first to stand up and publicly
commit their lives to Jesus were the chairman and his wife! I
thought, "The chairman of the upcoming festival is getting
converted?" But then I talked to him.
He said that years ago an evangelist came and preached the
Gospel at his church. "I received Christ then," he said. "But he
never asked us to publicly step forward. My wife and I have
talked about for years that we really would like a chance some
time to get up and go forward and let everybody know that we are
followers of Jesus Christ!"
Second Timothy says, "So do not be ashamed to testify about our
Lord." I love the story of that chairman. He was looking for an
opportunity to publicly share his conversion-to come out of the
shadows and into the light.
You and I can look for such opportunities, too. Get up! Go
forward! Speak! Let your friends know how Christ has changed
your life! Your story just may be use of God to change their
lives.
Once and For All
Religious
ceremonies... ah, yes! So many people rely on religious
ceremonies. "Day after day the Old Testament priest stands and
performs his religious duties." That's how Hebrews 10 describes
the Old Testament execution of the law. It says, "Again and
again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away
sins."
In the Old Testament, when the people brought the lamb they were
offering to the altar, they knew that it didn't take away sin.
It was a symbol. It was an obedience. It was a shadow. But it
didn't have any power in itself to cleanse them from sin.
It's the same thing today. There is no power in outward
religious rituals. That's why I think it's so exciting to tell
people where the power really is: in the blood of Jesus Christ.
He's the only one who can take away sin! He did it once and for
all!
But sadly, many believers still don't understand this truth. If
we don't study these truths for ourselves we will still think we
can somehow pay for our sinfulness. We miss the basis for our
belief. Understanding the truths of Scripture is key to our
witnessing to others about real divine forgiveness. When
forgiveness real for us, we can genuinely and boldly share with
others, too.
The High
Priest's Sacrifice
When you
talk to somebody who can't shake the sense of guilt or who feels
that God could never forgive them, bring them to these two Bible
verses. First, Hebrews chapter 10, says, "But when this priest
had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at
the right hand of God." That's our high priest, Jesus. The
sacrifice of Jesus was "for all time." Underline that in their
Bible! Push them to memorize it!
It goes on to say, "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember
no more. And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer
any sacrifice for sin." Tell them that Jesus paid with one
sacrifice for all time. It will never be brought up again! It
never needs to be brought up again. If you insist on bringing it
up, you're claiming that the sacrifice of Jesus wasn't good
enough.
The fact that Jesus' payment was "once for all" indicates that
it was a perfect sacrifice. There is nothing to add to it. It
did everything that it had to do. It took away the guilt. It
bore the punishment. It set us free. And that's what liberates
the conscience in people! When I think about the Good News
Gospel, I just can't keep it inside. What about you? So talk
about the cross and its perfection.
The Communion
Many
Americans go to Holy Communion, and this give you a chance to
reach your world for Jesus Christ. To me one of the times when I
feel the closest to the Lord is during communion. When I come to
partake of the bread and the cup, I feel so close to the Lord.
Ever since I was a little boy, I would watch the elders in the
church. I wasn't baptized yet, so I didn't participate in the
communion. But I would sit and watch the older people in my
church. So quiet! There was no noise, except for some coughing
in the winter-total silence.
Even when they sang they didn't sing with instruments. They
wanted no distractions. Then some old man would get up and read
a scripture passage. Somebody would ask for a hymn, and then
somebody finally thought it was time to break the bread and pass
it around.
As a little kid, I would watch all these people looking so
solemn, so respectful, so serious - such reflection. It left an
incredible impact on me. I love it! Hebrews 10 says, "We have
been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ
once for all."
Why don't you take a few moments with the Lord today? Let the
meaning of the broken body and the shed blood of Jesus Christ
refresh you and renew your purpose to proclaim the Good News.
And, when you talk to your friends - whether or not they go to
communion - it's a good symbol to use to talk about the cross.
